Seoul, South Korea

Last weekend, Becky and I took a little 4-day holiday to Seoul, South Korea. Like a delicious appetizer, it really wet our appetites for the summer traveling plans. The perfect weekend-getaway before the real-deal.

Seoul is the closest city I’ve every seen to what I would call a “city of the future.” Flat screen TVs can be found around every corner, most of them interactive touch screens. Many of the stations also had interactives designed for the last-minute shoppers. Need a new dress for that date tonight? Just scan your phone and it gets delivered to your house. Forgot to grab water at the store? No worries, it’s sold here too.

The hustle-and-bustle of Seoul was not unlike Tokyo, but it was tinged with a more trendy look. Unsurprisingly, as Seoul is among the newer cities in the world. Of course, thanks to the American influence in Seoul, many American products can be purchased anywhere in the city. I was excited to find Taco Bell, Dunkin Doughnuts, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, etc.

That said, Korean food trumps all of those. We walked into a handful of restaurants without having any clue what we were about to eat. Every time, it was odd, but amazing. I’m a huge kimchi fan now. We were never really sure what to do with all the tiny dishes of food we got, but every combination seemed to taste amazing.

As for sights, historic locations are a bit thin on the ground, but we got our fill at Changdeokgung Palace, Bukchon, and the Hwaseong fortress. After paying our respects to the local heritage, we partied it up in Hongdae until the wee hours of the morning (and even that was considered “going home too early”). Seoul knows how to have fun, that’s for sure.

As what I would consider one of the trendiest cities in the world, Seoul had great style and a coffee shop at every corner. Not to mention the whole trip rang in at about 450USD, including airfare from Tokyo. This one will be hard to top.

I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Image may be NSFW.
